Building for a Better Tomorrow requires a Strong Foundation

LNWA is a mission-minded housing company. Based in Delaware and active in ten states and the District of Columbia, LNWA and its affiliates operate more than 6000 apartments that serve people of all income levels. We, as our founder was, are both builders and advocates of affordable housing.

Our Founder

In the atrium of the National Housing Center in Washington, D.C. there is a life-size bust of Leon N. Weiner, who served as president of the National Association of Home Builders in 1967. He’s the only NAHB leader to be so honored. But then again, there was only one Leon Weiner.

Leon N. Weiner (1920-2002) was a tireless advocate for the development of housing to serve people of all income levels. Leon’s dogged commitment to fair housing took shape the 1950’s, when he planned, developed and built the first racially integrated suburban subdivision in the Mid-Atlantic region, Dunleith. During his prodigious career, Leon also served on President Lyndon Johnson’s Kaiser Committee on Urban Housing which led to the cornerstone Housing Act of 1968. He later served as a delegate to the White House Conference on Aging and the White House Conference on Small Business, was a Director for the Federal Home Loan Bank and President of the National Housing Conference.

Always an innovator, Leon, as chair of the NAHB Research Center, spearheaded development of a computer controlled “smart house”. The prototype could remotely control climate and lighting and was introduced at the International Builders Show in 1991, decades before the ubiquitous smart home devices we run today.

In 1979, Leon was inducted into the NAHB Housing Hall of Fame alongside James Rouse, the pioneering urban planner and William Levitt, the “father of modern suburbia”. During that ceremony, he was recognized as “…the conscience of the housing industry in America…”
